Gavin Katz, Cunning Minx and Shira B. Katz at OpenSF
Hello, all! Just a quick note of thanks to reporter Susan Mernit for the quick and friendly writeup of OpenSF in Oakland Local. Oakland Local is a great site for uncovered community news that the major outlets skip, BTW; you should read it if you’re in the area. And don’t Shira and Gavin Katz of the Pedestrian Polyamory podcast and I look like a cute little poly triad?
From the article:
InvisibleInk, an Oakland-based organizer, told Oakland Local that the conference had made a commitment to diversity early on. Unlike some conferences for polyamorous people, Open SF had a notable age range and far more people of color than most conference of this sort. Sessions focusing on people of color issues within the open community as well as sessions focused on family, size diversity, and navigating poly/mono relationships meant there were rooms where people could be heard, an inclusive approach.
So true; I personally attended a session on Multiple -Isms in the Poly Community, and I have to admit I hadn’t really thought much about diversity before that, with the exception of diversity of sexual orientation, preference and age.

12:00 Topic: Poly families with Sierra Black
Sierra Black’s Salon article on her open marriage and the 20/20 episode on polyamory and parenting.
Parenting questions she is asked:
- How do you find the time to be poly with a 4-year-old, a 7-year-old and an 18-year-old? Answer: this isn’t a one-way street; everyone pitches in so others can have date time.
- What do you tell the kids? Answer: Be open about who everyone is with age-appropriate information.
- What do you do when relationships end? Answer: deal with them just as you would with step-parents and keep them in the kids’ lives whenever possible.
- What advice do you have about coming out to older kids? Answer: we’re lucky because everyone in the community is open and poly and the kids have a support network.
- How are you out to the other adults in your kids’ life? School administrators, grandparents, doctors? Answer: anything you radiate normal, healthy vibes about, people will take in stride. Be comfortable, confident and open, and it’s easy to be out.
Conclusion: kids are very What’s In It for Me? They want to know that they are loved and that mommy, daddy and everyone else loves and cares about them, too.
Sierra blogs at ChildWild.com and writes for Babble.

Did you know that for hundreds of years, the Catholic church performed same sex unions and has never declared marriage to be between one man and one woman?

7:00 Topic: What you need to know about the church and gay marriage
Welcome to our special guest, Richard Wagner, otherwise known as Dr. Dick of Dr. Dick’s Sex Advice, a former priest and sexologist. Dr. Wagner debunks common misbeliefs about gay marriage, citing historical evidence that up until the 14th century, the church conducted same-sex unions, had an Office of Same Sex Unions and has never defined marriage as being between a man and a woman; in fact, it seemed to avoid using those terms.
Articles discussed: When Same Sex Marriage Was a Christian Rite, Same-Sex Unions in Premodern Europe by historian John Boswell
Dr. Wagner’s new book, the Amateur’s Guide to Death and Dying.

6:00 Topic: 50 Shades of Myth
If you’ve been hearing about 50 Shades of Gray, you know that it’s pretty lame and inaccurate. Not surprising, as it was written by a fanfic writer with absolutely no experience in or research into BDSM at all. And this article goes into the assumptions about how and why people engage in BDSM that the book gets wrong.
